SJO vs LIR: the key differences
Juan Santamaría International (SJO), near Alajuela in the Central Valley, is Costa Rica's main hub and handles the vast majority of international flights. It gives you easy access to all regions — especially the Caribbean, Pacific south, Jacó and Manuel Antonio. Most multi-region itineraries start and end at SJO.
Daniel Oduber Quirós International (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste, is the gateway to the dry Pacific northwest. If your entire trip is beach-focused in Guanacaste (Tamarindo, Flamingo, Papagayo, Coco, Nosara), LIR saves you a 4–5 hour drive each way versus routing through San José. Budget airlines including Southwest and Spirit now fly direct to LIR from several US cities.
