Where the Guanacaste coast gets genuinely upscale
Playa Flamingo is the kind of place where sailfish flags are displayed outside fishing lodges, where the marina is full of 30-foot sportfishing boats, and where the beach — wide, white, and backed by hills — genuinely earns the superlatives. It sits 80 kilometers south of Liberia airport and about 20 kilometers north of Tamarindo, positioned as one of Guanacaste’s premier upscale beach destinations alongside the Four Seasons Papagayo.
Unlike Playas del Coco to the north, Flamingo’s development has been more controlled — the beach itself remains relatively undeveloped, with the main infrastructure (marina, restaurants, hotels) set back from the sand. The marina holds around 200 vessels and is the hub for Costa Rica’s most productive sport fishing fleet operating in this section of the Pacific.
Private yacht charters
The private charter from Flamingo is the luxury version of the Guanacaste ocean experience. A 6-person boat with captain and crew covers snorkeling at offshore sites, paddleboarding, fishing, and a sunset return — with lunch and drinks typically included. This is a genuinely premium experience at a genuinely premium price, but the boat-to-person ratio and service level are incomparable to group tours.

The catamaran format brings the cost down significantly while still covering snorkeling, beach stops, and included food and drinks. These run from Flamingo beach daily in high season, with capacity around 20 people on larger vessels.

The Flamingo marina fleet targets sailfish, blue and black marlin, roosterfish, mahi-mahi, and wahoo in waters 15 to 40 nautical miles offshore. Sailfish are a near-daily catch from December through April; marlin peak from June through October in the offshore canyons. The fishing is catch-and-release for billfish as a standard practice with reputable operators.
A private Guanacaste sport fishing charter covers a full day offshore and remains one of the most productive inshore-offshore fishing experiences on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.
Costa Rica: sport fishing private boat charter (Guanacaste)Flamingo’s main sport fishing operators — Planet Sport Fishing, Flamingo Bay Sport Fishing, and Costa Rica Dreams Sportfishing — have multi-boat fleets with GPS plotters, outriggers, and live bait wells. Half-day inshore charters for roosterfish and snapper start around USD 450 to 600 for up to 4 passengers. Full-day offshore trips run USD 800 to 1,400.
The beach
Playa Flamingo’s 700-meter beach is among the best in Guanacaste — white sand, relatively calm water in the northern section near the rocks, and a gradual entry that is safe for swimming. The main swimming area is in front of the few beach restaurants near the parking area. The southern section of the beach is quieter but has some rock exposure at low tide.
The water clarity is good in the dry season (December through April) — snorkeling from shore at the rocky northern point yields reef fish and occasionally octopus. In the wet season, runoff from the hills reduces visibility.
Where to eat and drink
Coco Loco Restaurant is the closest thing Flamingo has to a classic beach bar — beachfront tables, ice-cold Imperial beer, decent ceviche. La Cantina del Mar is more upscale with good cocktails and seafood at USD 20 to 35 per person. For sunset drinks, the hill above the marina has a bar (Bar El Ancla) with the best view in town.
Playa Brasilito, 3 kilometers south, has better local soda options if you want rice and beans at USD 6 rather than USD 25 — worth knowing for breakfast.
Where to stay
Luxury: Guanacaste Luxury Villas and Flamingo Marina Resort are the top-tier options at USD 250 to 500 per night. Mid-range: Hotel Guanacaste Lodge and Hotel Costa Coral are solid mid-range choices at USD 90 to 160. Budget: There is no real budget accommodation in Flamingo itself — Brasilito, 3 kilometers south, has cheaper guesthouses.
Getting there
Liberia airport (LIR) is the right entry point for Flamingo. The drive is 80 kilometers on well-maintained roads — take Route 21 south toward Santa Cruz, then the turnoff toward Flamingo. About 1 hour without traffic. A taxi from LIR to Flamingo costs USD 70 to 90. Shared shuttle services (GrayLine, Interbus) run USD 50 to 65 per person from major hotels.
Frequently asked questions about Playa Flamingo
What is the best time to fish from Flamingo?
December through April is peak season for sailfish — 5 to 10 fish per boat per day is common with good conditions. For marlin (blue and black), July through October is the productive offshore window. Roosterfish are present year-round in the nearshore area within 5 nautical miles of the coast.
Is Playa Flamingo appropriate for families?
Yes, but the price point and atmosphere skew toward couples and adults. Families with young children do well here given the calm beach and organized activities. The 5-day Guanacaste resort itinerary includes Flamingo as a combination stop with Playa Conchal, which has better calm-water swimming for children.
How does Flamingo compare to Tamarindo?
Flamingo is quieter, more upscale, and better for fishing and charter activities. Tamarindo has better surf, more restaurants, more nightlife, and more diverse activities at lower prices. Flamingo is the right choice if the priority is quality over variety.
Is the marina open to visiting yachts?
Yes. The Flamingo marina accepts visiting vessels with full fuel, water, and provisioning facilities. Contact the marina office in advance for slip availability during high season. Anchoring off the beach is also possible in calm conditions.
How to fit Playa Flamingo into your itinerary
Flamingo works best as a 1 to 2-night stop on a northern Guanacaste circuit. The natural combination is Liberia arrival → Flamingo (sport fishing/yacht charter) → Las Catalinas or Playas del Coco (diving) → Tamarindo (surf and nightlife). The 5-day Guanacaste resort itinerary covers this circuit in detail.
